What kind of tree is that?
Some woodlot and forest owners are very familiar with the species of trees that they have in there woods and some need assistance in determining the species of trees that they have.
Take for instance, an oak. You can distinguish a standing oak by it's leaves, it's bark and it's acorn. However, their is a difference to each species. The red oak leaves are different from a white oak leaves, the bark is different and of course the acorns, are different. And, what about a cherry tree or a maple.... Is that a hard maple or a soft maple?
On our website we do have a page for Michigan tree identification that can be helpful in identifying your species.
How many tree species can you identify?
We have just recently discovered a new resource for identifying your trees! It is a digital app that can be used on smartphones. You can literally be standing next to the tree and use this app. to identify your tree. As long as you retain your service....sometimes in the heavily wooded and hilly areas we we can loose our phone service. You will still be able to take a photo and compare.
This app is called Leaf Snap. It's an electronic field guide. You can click on the link here and check it out! leafsnap.com/
Today is Friday. Maybe you'll get an opportunity this weekend, to take a walk in the woods and try seeing how many species of trees you can identify! Sounds like a great family activity to us!
